Sustainability has become far more than a pure marketing trend – today, it is a philosophy that values reduction, reuse or recycling of resources and waste for ecological and economic reasons. The term comes from forestry, where it originally meant the awareness that trees need to be cut down as an economic commodity, but if too many trees in one forest are cut down, the forest will disappear. In this sense, sustainable behaviour is cutting down the right number of trees – enough, but not too many.
Today, the meaning has become metaphorical. The same logic that was originally applied to forests is equally applicable to the environment as a whole – to nature itself, its resources and its inhabitants. It concerns the fragility of our ecosystem and the limits of nature as a resource itself. With climate change, clean areas on our planet are becoming ever scarcer. That is why wasteful behaviour will ultimately become more and more costly – for businesses, individuals and society alike.
