Energy Efficient Motor Selection
|
Most electric motors in pump systems are oversized to allow for worst-case scenarios that rarely or never occur. Pump flow is typically regulated by a valve. Forcing the flow through a constriction to achieve the correct flow rate increases friction, so energy is wasted. Motors on pumps already installedEnergy efficiency is far more significant to the bottom line than the capital outlay to purchase a motor. For example, an 11 kW motor costing roughly €1,100 can consume more than €90,000 worth of electricity over a 10-year operating life. Many plant managers send a failed motor out to be rewound, although motor rewinding will reduce efficiency. The solution is to adopt a motor management policy that gives clear guidelines on when to purchase high efficiency motors. As a rule, small motors and those with long running hours should be replaced. Large motors, ones that run only occasionally and motors in unusual frame sizes can be rewound, but there are also times when replacement of a fully functional motor can be justified on energy grounds. Motors on new CP pumpsHigh efficiency motors are up to 3.5% more efficient than standard motors due to their design and the amount of active material (copper and iron) used. A high efficiency motor is more efficient across a wider load range than a standard model and loses far less efficiency over the speed range. Energy efficient motors also save on operating costs by providing better reliability than standard motors because less energy is converted into heat, keeping the temperature low inside the enclosure and thus reducing downtime and maintenance. High efficiency motors will reduce your energy costs. This is why CP partners with various motor manufacturers to offer you a wide choice of models – including efficiency class 1 motors (EFF1 or IE2) as standard for use in non-hazardous areas. CP partners offer a range of low voltage motors from 0.05 kW to 100 kW
