CP benefits from Climate Cent Foundation for energy efficiency renovationAn energy efficiency renovation of CP's main production building in Zofingen, Switzerland, will help reduce its own plant’s energy costs and emissions. The Climate Cent Foundation is a voluntary initiative launched by Swiss industry with the aim of promoting efficient climate protection. In an agreement with the Swiss government, it committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 12 million tonnes over the period 2008 to 2012, with a decrease of at least 2 million tonnes within Switzerland. The Climate Cent Foundation is funded by a charge levied on all petrol and diesel imports at a rate of 1.5 centimes per litre. The Project Funding Programmes and Buildings Programme support CO2 emission reduction projects focused on motor fuels, space heating, industrial process heat, waste heat recovery and energy efficiency renovations. In the aftermath of the financial crisis in winter 2008 and spring 2009, CP saw its total sales drop. Measures had to be considered to weather a difficult business year – including the undesirable option of a workforce reduction. As a result, CP decided to embark on a Climate Cent Foundation energy efficiency renovation project. “This project enabled CP to retain its full staff by compensating for the dearth of work by deploying our own labour force to carry out an energy efficiency renovation on the grounds of short-time work”, says CEO Urs Wuersch. “Anti-cyclical investments always have the benefit of lower prices due to higher risks. But in our case, the Climate Cent Foundation’s contribution to costs boosted the low price advantage at manageable risk. And as a result, CP now enjoys the full benefits of both reduced heating costs and lower emissions.” The Climate Cent Foundation’s Buildings Programme will be phased out at the end of 2009. It will be succeeded by the national Buildings Programme operated by the Swiss government and cantons.
